Please tell me about Light House Birth?
My business partner, Hannah Lyons, and I created Light House Birth after recognizing the lack of resources within the birthing industry. Light House Birth was created to build a comprehensive community of passionate providers and industry affiliates that already provide services here in the valley. This online community serves midwives, birth workers, doctors, herbalists, acupuncturists, healers, photographers, and educators—and we are continuing to grow. We aim to provide our valley moms and moms-to-be with the resources they need to make informed decisions about their birth, while supporting and elevating our collective along the way.
How and why did you start it?
As a traditionally trained OB/Gyn, I recognized that there was an absence of awareness about the choices and resources available for alternative and holistic birth options. I believe that providing people with information about the different options available--whether it is a home birth, water birth, or medicated hospital birth--will educate and empower them to have the birth they desire. With Light House Birth, we are one step closer to bringing that full- spectrum knowledge to our community.
What have you learned along the way?
I have learned that it is not a lack of desire preventing people from having the birth of their choice, but a lack of education in regard to the options available. The information that we take in, whether it be from our providers, friends/family, or Google, is very fragmented. This information leads to confusion about what options exist, and how to go about putting these puzzle pieces together. My goal is to empower and educate our moms through this platform, and ultimately remove the uncertainty about holistic birthing choices.
How can your business benefit our patient base?
We are bringing the information our valley moms need to make decisions about their birth. We understand that everyone envisions their birth differently, and it may not necessarily align with what they hear from their providers, family members, or friends. We have spent countless hours curating resources for our moms and moms-to-be, so that they can take their health into their own hands and have the birth they desire. One resource that we have just completed is a “Holistic Hospital Directory”. To create that resource, I called all of our valley hospitals (one by one) and gathered information about what birthing amenities they provide. We are continually expanding our resource list, and will continue to create more original Light House Birth resources.
Anything else you would like to add?
Our main goal is to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to our clients by gathering the resources necessary to make informed decisions about their birt
